Plugging in – Troubleshooting Juneau’s EV Chargers

You need a charge at one of Juneau’s many public chargers.  So you park, turn the car off, pop the hatch, get out, and plug the car in.  But what if that’s not working? Here’s the most common issues and how to solve them.

The car is plugged in to a Level 2, but it’s not charging

  1. Make sure the car is turned off (Tesla excluded).
  2. Make sure the plug is clicked in place.
  3. Look at the charger itself.  There should be a light indicating “Power,” “Charging,” or “Fault.”  The charger is out of service if the Fault light is on, or all three lights (including the Power light) are off.

I am plugged in at a Level 3 and it is asking for a card.

This is a relic from when these machines were used down south. All Level 3 chargers were donated to Juneau second hand, and have been made free to the public. No card is needed. Just plug in and press START.

I need to stop charging at a Level 3 before the time is up.

  1. Do NOT unplug before the machine tells you it is safe to do so.
  2. Press the STOP button.
  3. Wait for the charger to end communication with the car.
  4. When the screen says it is safe to unplug, press the yellow eject button and remove plug.

The car is plugged into a Level 3, but the screen says there is an error.

  1. Make sure the car is turned off.
  2. If the car is not charging, unplug the cable.
  3. Press and hold the STOP button. This will reset the system.
  4. The screen may prompt for a card, but no card is needed.
  5. Plug in with a bit of force.  The plugs are heavy. Make sure the yellow button clicks out so that it is flush with the rest of the handle.
  6. Press the START button.
  7. Help the plug make better contact by leaning your weight into the plug slightly, while pulling upwards gently on the handle (do not press yellow button).
  8. Once it starts charging, you can let go of the plug.

I am at the Alaskan Brewery Level 3 charger and it’s not working.

Follow the instructions posted on the charger, or go in and talk to an employee at the brewery.  Their charger sometimes has unique issues due to how it’s wired to their electric.

I unplugged at a Level 3, and the warning indicator lights began flashing in the car, or the car will not shift into drive.

Call us immediately if this happens. Very rarely, a malfunction will happen with these old Level 3 chargers that will cause a code in the Leaf.  We have a tool to physically fix it. Otherwise, you would need to have the car towed.
